A fall getaway in Hocking Hills happens inside a short, beautiful window. The color, the trails, and the October events all land within a few weeks. That is wonderful when you plan for it. Guests who arrive without a plan often spend the weekend driving around instead of resting.
We host a lot of families in October, so here is one cozy fall weekend laid out in order. It opens with a Friday arrival, builds to a full Saturday, and ends with an easy Sunday morning. We also included a plan for when it rains, and a short packing list so you won’t forget any essentials.
If you want the wider view of the season, start with our guide to fall in Hocking Hills. It covers peak color, foliage spots, and festivals. This post picks up where that one leaves off, with the trip itself.
Before You Book Your Fall Getaway in Hocking Hills
October weekends in Hocking Hills book earlier than any other time of year. Cabins near Old Man’s Cave fill months ahead of peak color. Groups who want a specific date usually decide by midsummer. So the first thing to settle is how long you are staying.
Two nights is the right length for a first fall trip. A Friday check-in gives you one full hiking day and one slow morning before checkout. If the weekend you want is already gone, adding a Thursday or a Sunday night opens up far more availability.
The second thing to settle is which weekend. Peak color usually lands in the second half of October, though ridges and overlooks turn before the shaded gorges do. Check the Ohio Department of Natural Resources fall color report in the week before you travel. ODNR posts updates every week through autumn, starting September 25, 2026.
Your Cozy Fall Weekend Itinerary in Hocking Hills
The weekend below assumes a Friday check-in and a Sunday check-out. Every stop sits within a short drive of Logan, Ohio. Treat the Saturday afternoon options as a choice rather than a checklist.
Friday Evening: Arrive Before Dark
Try to reach the cabin while there is still light. Evening comes early in the gorges in October, and unfamiliar back roads are harder in the dark. Arriving in daylight also means you can find the fire pit before you need it.
As you drive your way to the cabins, make one stop on that drive for a quick grocery run. The Kroger on Chieftain Drive in Logan is the closest full grocery store to the cabins. The next nearest sits about 13 miles away in Nelsonville. A single stop on the way in saves a second trip on Saturday.
After that, keep the evening simple. A fire pit, a hot tub, and one shared meal are plenty for a first night. That first evening tends to set the tone for the whole weekend, so protect it.
Saturday Morning: Color on the Trails

Saturday is the day that earns the trip. Aim to be hiking by 8 a.m., because the Old Man’s Cave lot fills fast on October weekends. The early start pays you back twice. You get a quiet trail, and you get soft morning light in the gorge.
But which trail should you be going to? That depends on the colors for that week. Head for the high overlooks early in October, when the ridges turn first. Drop into the gorges later in the month, once the shaded trails catch up. The ODNR color report tells you which applies to your weekend.
For most groups, the main gorge trail at Old Man’s Cave is the answer. It runs about 1.5 miles past three waterfalls, and two hours is right at an unhurried pace. Trail maps and current conditions live on the ODNR Hocking Hills State Park page. If you would rather dodge the crowd altogether, read our guide on how to avoid crowds. It covers the quieter hours and the less-visited trailheads.
Then head back to the cabin for a late breakfast. A morning hike plus a real breakfast is a full half day. Resist the temptation to squeeze in a second trail before lunch.
Saturday Afternoon: Pick One
That leaves the afternoon, and the trick is to choose one thing. Three stops between lunch and dinner turn a cozy weekend into a logistics exercise. These three options are worth building a Saturday around.
The fall foliage train is the most seasonal. The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway runs October Fall Foliage trains Thursday through Sunday all month, plus November 1. Weekend trains leave the Nelsonville depot at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Weekday trains leave at 1 p.m. The ride lasts about two hours. Adult tickets are $22, children are $17, and seniors and military are $20. Book ahead, because foliage weekends sell out.
You can also consider an afternoon in downtown Logan, which suits mixed groups better. Coffee, local shops, and an early dinner fill the hours without a long drive. It works well when the party includes grandparents or small children, and it keeps you close to the cabin.
An October event is the third option, and the one to check first. Pumpkin shows, farm visits, and haunted trails run across the county all month. Our guide to Halloween in Hocking Hills lists the verified 2026 dates. Confirm the date before you commit your Saturday to it.
Saturday Evening: The Part People Forget to Plan

Book your Saturday evening before you arrive. This is the part most visitors leave to chance, and it fills up fast. We have two good evening suggestions, and one needs a reservation.
You can go stargazing at the John Glenn Astronomy Park, which you need to book ahead. The park runs free guided programs on clear Friday and Saturday nights, roughly March through late November. Programs begin about half an hour after sunset. Reservations are now required and limited by available parking, so book early in the week. See the John Glenn Astronomy Park FAQ for current program details.
Even without a program, the park stays open 24 hours a day for visitors with their own telescopes. Fall brings some of the year’s clearest skies. The park sits a short drive from the Old Man’s Cave area.
The other option is simply staying in. After a full day of hiking, many of our groups would rather not get back in the car. A fire pit, a hot tub, and a game room keep every age happy. Cooking together beats driving out again after dark.
Sunday Morning: One Easy Walk, Then Home
Sunday works best with one short walk and nothing else on the list. Ash Cave is the easiest option in the park, with a paved path of about a quarter mile each way. Strollers and wheelchairs can even reach the cave floor, so this is a great option for everyone.
Pack the car before you go. Loading up first turns checkout into a five-minute job, and it means you can leave straight from the trailhead.
Then drive out the scenic way. The Hocking Hills Scenic Byway follows State Route 374 for roughly 26 miles through the heart of the region. Add an hour for a relaxed pace with a few overlook stops. It is the best last look at the color before the highway takes over.
What to Do If It Rains
Rain changes the order of a fall weekend in Hocking Hills rather than canceling it. Most of the itinerary above still works, with three swaps.
- Waterfalls run harder after rain. Ash Cave and Cedar Falls are worth the walk in a light drizzle. Bring proper rain layers and go anyway.
- The foliage train has heated coaches as weather requires. A wet Saturday afternoon is a good argument for the 2:30 p.m. departure.
- Stargazing runs only on clear nights. The astronomy park posts a forecast by noon on program days, along with a go-or-no-go note.
A washed-out evening is the best argument for a cabin with a game room and an indoor fireplace. Decide on that backup when you book rather than on the day.
What to Pack for a Cozy Fall Weekend

October mornings in Hocking Hills run cold and afternoons run mild. Layers matter more than one heavy coat. Pack these six things on purpose.
- Waterproof shoes with real grip. Gorge trails stay damp under the hemlocks well after the rain stops.
- A headlamp or flashlight. Trails lose light early, and parking lots are dark by dinner.
- Warm layers for after dark. Hot tubs and fire pits are cold walks in October without a robe or a heavy jacket.
- A cooler bag. It makes that Kroger stop easier on the way in.
- A blanket for the fire pit. Evenings drop into the forties.
- A paper map or offline directions. Cell signal is patchy on the back roads.
